The Truth About Carpet Cleaning Myths: Expert Advice from Spruced Up Carpet Cleaning- The Real Clean Asks the Questions.

Updated: Nov 8

The Real Clean: Sharon, we know that Spruced Up offers upholstery and hard-floor cleaning as well as carpet services, but we’d like to focus today on some common myths and misconceptions around carpet cleaning. Would that be alright?

Sharon Best: Absolutely While we do offer hard-floor cleaning through our specialized service Spruced Up Floors, carpet and upholstery cleaning is at the heart of what we do. We’ve put significant training and investment into providing top-quality, NCCA-certified care specifically for carpets. And it’s true, there are a lot of misconceptions out there—I’d love to help set the record straight!

Why Should I Get My Carpets Professionally Cleaned?

The Real Clean: One myth we hear often is that cleaning carpets can shrink or damage them. Is there truth to this?

Sharon Best: This is a common concern, but rest assured, professional cleaning—when done correctly—should never shrink or damage your carpet. This is where an NCCA-certified technician’s expertise is invaluable. We know which cleaning methods and temperatures work for each carpet type, so we’re not just guessing. That expertise ensures your carpets are handled safely, maintaining their quality for years to come.

The Real Clean: Another myth suggests that carpets become dirty faster after cleaning—people feel they have to keep cleaning them once they start. Is that really the case?

Sharon Best: This is often due to poor cleaning methods, like using a detergent based cleaner that leaves a residue. Think about how shampoo works on hair: if not rinsed out properly, it leaves a sticky buildup, which attracts more dirt. At Spruced Up, we use micro-splitting agents that break down dirt without leaving any residue. Our approach means the carpets stay cleaner for longer and don’t get that rapid resoiling that’s common with outdated methods. And yes, Alan—my husband—hasn’t had the need for shampoo for quite a while now, but he still knows the trouble with detergent based carpet cleaners!

The Real Clean: There’s a lot of talk about the health benefits of clean carpets. What’s your take on this?

Sharon Best: Absolutely, clean carpets contribute to a much healthier home. Over time, carpets trap allergens, dust mites, and bacteria, which can trigger allergies or respiratory issues. Our cleaning process goes deep to remove this debris, not just from the surface but all the way down to the base of the fibers. By combining HEPA-filtered vacuums with specialized cleaning solutions, we ensure carpets are thoroughly cleaned, leaving behind a healthier indoor environment. This is especially beneficial for homes with children or pets.

The Real Clean: What about the range of services out there? With so many companies offering carpet cleaning, what sets Spruced Up apart?

Sharon Best: There really is a big difference, and it comes down to training, commitment, and equipment. We’re a certified member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA), which is an industry gold standard. Many generalist cleaning companies may offer carpet cleaning as an “add-on,” but they may not have the same depth of knowledge. We’ve completed advanced training to understand carpet fibers, cleaning chemistry, and how to treat stubborn stains.

Our hard-floor cleaning service, Spruced Up Floors, is a natural extension of this commitment to specialist cleaning. But our focus here today is carpet and upholstery—and our dedication to doing those exceptionally well is what truly sets us apart.

The Real Clean: Finally, there are a lot of “cleaning hacks” circulating online. What’s your view on DIY carpet cleaning solutions?

Sharon Best: Some DIY hacks can be effective, but many can also lead to real headaches! For instance, using too much water or the wrong cleaning agents can lead to issues like mold or discoloration. If it seems “too good to be true,” it probably is! We always say, if in doubt, reach out to a professional for guidance. We’re happy to offer advice, and sometimes a quick photo from a customer can help us determine the best way forward.
