The Real Clean Meets Spruced Up: How to Get Your Home Ready for Spring
After a long winter, many of us are looking ahead to brighter days and fresher homes. The Real Clean sat down with Sharon, owner and chief technician of Spruced Up, to talk about how to keep carpets, upholstery, and flooring in top condition and when to call in the professionals for a deep clean intervention – or a ‘Spruce Up’ for short!
The Real Clean: Sharon, spring is often the time people start thinking about deep cleaning their homes. Where’s the best place to start?
Sharon: Absolutely! Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, especially after winter, when carpets and upholstery have taken a beating from muddy boots, pets, and central heating drying out the air. The best place to start is with regular maintenance—frequent vacuuming, dusting, and airing out your home. But even with the best upkeep, certain areas will need deeper cleaning. That’s where a professional service comes in.
The Real Clean: Let’s talk about vacuuming. Is there a right or wrong way to do it?
Sharon: There is! First, check your vacuum. If you’re using a common bagless model, make sure you regularly clean the filters—otherwise, it won’t pick up dirt as effectively, and it can push allergens back into the air. Many professionals, including us at Spruced Up, prefer using HEPA-rated, bagged vacuums like Sebo. They capture more dust and allergens, making them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. A good rule of thumb is to vacuum high-traffic areas daily and everything else at least once a week. And take your time—slow, overlapping strokes are much more effective than rushing!
The Real Clean: At what point should someone call in a professional like Spruced Up?
Sharon: If vacuuming and spot-cleaning aren’t cutting it anymore, or if you notice lingering odours, dull carpets, or stains that won’t budge, it’s time to call in the professionals. We have specialist equipment, like our van-mounted Airflex Storm system and rotary cleaning machines, to deep-clean carpets and upholstery. We can also tackle hard floors, including natural stone and synthetic flooring, with professional-grade cleaning, sealing, and polishing.
The Real Clean: Some people might be tempted to rent a machine and try it themselves. What’s the difference between DIY and professional cleaning?
Sharon: The difference is huge. Rental machines can leave carpets over-wet, leading to damp smells or even mould. They also lack the heat and suction power of professional equipment, meaning they can leave behind dirt and residues. At Spruced Up, we use NCCA-approved techniques that not only clean more deeply but also dry faster, so you can get back to enjoying your home sooner.
The Real Clean: Do you have any top tips for homeowners looking to maintain their carpets and upholstery between professional cleans?
Sharon: Definitely! First, use entrance mats to reduce the amount of dirt being tracked in. Second, vacuum regularly, as we discussed. Third, tackle spills immediately—blot, don’t rub, and use a clean white cloth. Avoid using supermarket stain removers, as they can sometimes make things worse. And finally, schedule a professional clean once or twice a year to keep everything looking and feeling fresh.
The Real Clean: If someone wants to book a professional clean with Spruced Up, what’s the best way to get in touch?
Sharon: The easiest way is to send me a photo of your carpets, upholstery, or flooring via WhatsApp—I can often give advice straight away. You can also call me on 07843 202986. We’re a friendly, owner-operated business, and we love helping people bring their homes back to life.
So, if you’ve got a spring gathering, family event, or just want to refresh your home for the new season, now’s the perfect time for a Spruce Up!
